If ever a picture spoke a thousand words, this one does.
It’s from the Black Obelisk, now in the British Museum, and depicts King Jehu of Israel (or possibly one of his representatives) bowing before King Shalmaneser III of Assyria. It’s the oldest extant picture of an Israelite; it seems strangely poignant that he should be bowing before a foreign king.
