A gentleman in Geneva - 29 October 2010 |
|
A friend emailed me with this great anecdote, which he tells me may or may not be apocryphal, but either way serves to illustrate some of the points arising from some previous posts about Luther and the art of robust argument here and here.
The story goes that one reason the Hungarians became more largely Reformed than Lutheran at the Reformation is because when a Hungarian delegation was sent to Wittenburg, their reaction was that Luther was a loudmouthed and uncouth peasant. Melancthon then happened to mention that there was a gentleman in Geneva whom they might get along with better.
