I’ll be back… - 29 October 2010 |

There’s a tragic moment in Judges 8:9, when Gideon promises the men of Penuel, “When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.”
Let’s assume for a moment (and perhaps some would disagree, but on balance I think this reading is correct) that, though the men of Penuel were ungodly, Gideon’s reaction was nonetheless unjustified. That being the case, just think about what Gideon is saying here.
It’s a bit like this: “Well, fellers, I’m on a bit of a mission here to deal with the LORD’s enemies. But when I’ve finished with them, and peace reigns once more, I’ll be able to get back to the really important task of wreaking havoc and vengeance on my brothers and sisters among the LORD’s people.”
Or a bit like this: “This evangelism is taking up a lot of my time at the moment, but once it’s over I’ll be able to get back to the real business of dealing with those Christians who’ve been getting on my nerves.”
