The different elements in a service of Christian worship have at two audiences:* the Lord enthroned in heaven, and the people standing (or sitting or kneeling) around us here on earth.

The impact of our speech on both these audiences is enhanced by vigorous, enthusiastic participation. In general, the LORD is praised more fittingly, and our brothers and sisters in Christ are edified more thoroughly, when our speaking and singing is less like the squeaking of the church mouse and more like the rumble of distant thunder. Volume, not timidity, is the order of the day at church.

Can I therefore encourage you, as Paul might say, both in relation to “how you ought to live and to please God,” and also “concerning brotherly love,” to “do this more and more” (1 Thessalonians 4:1, 9-10).

    * Actually, there are other audiences besides these, but that’s a subject for another day.
