Singing the Psalms - 23 November 2010 |
|
There are lots of good reasons to sing the Psalms at church. One of them was particularly obvious last Sunday, when the sermon was on Judges 10:6-16. This text narrates the near-terminal decline of the godless and wicked nation of Israel when the LORD finally refused to listen any longer to their pleas for mercy. It’s a portrait of a nation whom the LORD has (at least for the time being) completely abandoned.
Many of the features of Israel’s life that led to this catastrophe are present in 21st-century Britain. As believers living in the midst of this crisis, what should we sing?
Of course, all the truths of the gospel stand firm: Jesus is LORD and our hope remains secure and we’re adopted as children of our heavenly Father and so on. But what can we sing that specifically addresses the particular situation in which we find ourselves? Frankly, if we didn’t have songs like Psalm 112 and Psalm 120, I don’t have the faintest idea where we should turn. The Psalms – and, I venture to suggest, the Psalms alone – give us words to sing in every season of life.
