  • Might as well fill it with something useful - 28 March 2011

The kids came back from Sunday School yesterday full of the usual excitement. “It was all about about how Jesus gets people from Satan’s side over onto his side,” they said. “And about Satan’s two tricks – lying and persecuting.”

So, just to make sure, I checked with the Sunday School teachers. And it’s true. They covered a lot of ground, it seems; but they’ve got such a lot of brain-space at that age – might as well fill it with something useful.

Here’s how 1 John 2:18-28 looked to the kids at Emmanuel yesterday morning:

    1. Opposites. Hot/cold etc

    2. The antithesis. People lined up with God – following Jesus.  People lined up against God – following Satan.

    3. The antithesis in history. Some examples generated by the children.

    4. How do people move from Satan’s side to Jesus’ side?
    a. the truth about Jesus
    b. the power of the Holy Spirit working inside

    5. How does Satan try to get people to join him?  The opposite of what Jesus does:
    a. he tells lies about Jesus – false teaching
    b. he hurts from the outside – persecution

    6. How does Jesus protect his people?  The same way he wins them:
    a. the truth of the gospel
    b. the power of the Spirit

    7. So what should we do? Pray for our brothers and sisters in places where they hear false teaching or suffer persecution.

Yeah obviously these are the teachers’ notes. Even the smartest 3-year-old might struggle with “antithesis”.
