Notes to self - 3 June 2011 |
|
1. Less is more. Jesus is yet more still. Silence is golden. Not every verse needs equal homiletical coverage. Not every liturgical element needs more than two lines of Scripture, and almost none of them ever need explaining. Use the Scripture readings you’ve already got. Remember George Herbert.
2. Speaking isn’t simple. Speak to men as men. God declares and commands and exhorts; he rarely pleads and (almost?) never cajoles. Watch out for sentences beginning, “When my son was 4 years old,” and “This verse is very special to me because.” Ask questions, don’t just give answers.
3. People are complicated. Some people need a brick through their front window; others need an invitation through their letterbox. Almost everyone needs something. Early does not mean fast.
