Stay the night - 1 July 2011 |

Judges 19 is all about where the vulnerable should spend the night. The Hebrew lun/liyn (to lodge, to stay the night) is found in Judges 19:4, 6, 7, 9 (x2), 10, 11, 13, 15 (x2), 20. The night, when you’re asleep, is when you’re vulnerable (just ask Samson, Judges 16:19), and therefore Jdg 19 is all about where (and indeed whether) the vulnerable will be able to find anywhere safe to stay in Israel during the days of the Judges. By the time you reach the end of the chapter, you know the answer to that question.
All of that makes the book of Ruth, which was set “in the days when the Judges ruled” (1:1), all the more remarkable.
