“The more involved a Minister becomes, the greater the danger.”

Richard C. Davids on Revd Bob Childress’s habit of getting involved in people’s lives.

“Here he was, sometimes acting as judge, sometimes keeper of the peace, and occasionally the man to whom they came for advice on wills, suits against neighbours, and judgments. A man who did all that for you came to seem like family. And, like family, you could get grieved with him. It is easier and far safer for a Minister to keep apart from his parishioners, to refer them to others for help. It is easier, too, not to serve them in the way Bob did. The disappointments were often too keen. But then, the joys were that much greater.” (Richard C. Davids, The Man who Moved a Mountain, p. 182)
