When you drop a stone in a pond, what happens?
Imagine it in slow-motion: It hits the water and sinks; then a fountain of water shoots up into the air (which is why you get wet if you’re too close); and then the ripples start spreading out from the centre towards the edge of the water.
Right, so the book of Acts (cf. 1:8) is like this:
The stone hits the water and sinks – the death of Jesus.
The fountain of water shoots up into the air – the resurrection and ascension of Jesus.
The ripples start spreading outward from the centre – the gospel spreads throughout the world by the power of the Spirit in the book of Acts and beyond.
