  • Why do we sing Psalms? - 30 August 2011

I’ve been asked this question a few times, and I think it deserves some comment.

On the one hand, it’s a reasonable question. After all, many Bible-believing churches don’t sing Psalms, whereas at Emmanuel we do. Every week. At least two. That’s weird, right? So, why do we do it?

On the other hand, it’s an odd question. An intriguing question. For no one has ever asked me why we sing hymns and songs, despite that fact that their words, though generally based on biblical themes, are basically written by man. Psalms, on the other hand, are the word of God, tweaked as little as possible to make them fit a singable tune.

So why is it that singing the word of man is second nature to us, whereas singing the word of God requires some special justification?
