David, Saul and Jonathan and their clothes - 6 October 2011 |
|
David tried on Saul’s clothes (17:38) – which looked a lot like Goliath’s (cf. 17:5) – but they weren’t right (17:39).
Having killed Goliath, David the man of war (16:18; cf. his first words in 17:26) put the giant’s armour in his tent (17:54). Maybe the man of war will be needing stuff like that (cf. 18:5, 7).
Jonathan gives David his robe, armour, sword, bow and belt when he makes a covenant with him (18:4). Perhaps that’ll do him more good than Goliath’s armour.
Perhaps Saul comes to his senses momentarily when the Spirit of God came upon him in Ramah, and “he stripped off his clothes” (19:24).
David “cut off a corner of Saul’s robe ” (24:4), then immediately feels pretty bad about it. Imagine that – stealing/disfiguring the king’s garb? On the other hand, Saul’s loss of a bit of clothing seems to bring him (momentarily, at least) to his senses once more (24:16ff).
Saul dressed in “other garments” in 28:8, but not, sadly, with the best of intentions.
And finally, after his suicide, his enemies “stripped off his armour” (31:9).
