Doctrine in a nutshell 10: Eschatology

The tenth in a series of brief summaries of Christian doctrine prepared for a Systematic Theology course at the Belgrade Bible School

The risen Lord Jesus Christ is enthroned at the right hand of God the Father as the King of heaven and earth. His kingdom is now growing through the church’s proclamation of the gospel as he calls all nations to worship him. History is now the story of all things being brought under the rule of Christ. Jesus’ death and resurrection provides the pattern for the growth of his kingdom: individuals and nations are brought low in judgment and repentance (death) before receiving new life in Christ (resurrection). When Christians die, their souls are present with Christ in heaven while they wait for the Last Day, the Day of Judgment. On that day, Jesus will return in glory, all people will be resurrected bodily and judged, and the whole creation will be renewed. The lost will be cast into hell and the saved will live for ever in the New Heavens and the New Earth.
